Quality check, availability of generic drugs key: Chandigarh Doctors

Doctors in the city on Friday stressed that the quality and availability of generic medicines should be properly checked so that doctors at the government hospitals can prescribe them instead of branded drugs.

In most of the city hospitals, the doctors prescribe branded drugs at present. As a result the patients have to bear the brunt, as the branded drugs are sold at higher rates in the pharmacies.

“Once a doctor prescribes a generic medicine, there is no one to check the quality in the pharmaceutical shops. There should be some mechanism so that the quality of the medicines are checked. You need to make generic drugs available as well,” said Dr TD Yadav from the department of general surgery, PGI.

On Thursday, city MP Kiron Kher directed Director Health Services (DHS) Vanita Gupta, director of GMCH, Sector-32, Atul Sachdeva and PGI director’s office that doctors should prescribe generic medicines instead of branded drugs.

“The directions from the ministry of health and family welfare regarding prescription of generic medicines to the patients should be strictly followed. They (DHS, GMCH, PGI) have been told that the doctors should be issued written instructions to prescribe medicines with generic names instead of brand names,” Kher said.

A senior faculty member from GMCH said other than quality concern about the generic medicines, there are very less number of shops compared to branded drugs. “It will obviously help the patients because generic medicines are cheaper. But, we are sometimes forced to prescribe branded drugs because generic medicines are not easily available in the market,” he said.

PGI spokeswoman Manju Wadwalkar said they have written on the patients’ card that generic medicines should be purchased. “Instructions too have been passed to the doctors about it,” she said.
