Chandigarh doctor devised technique to treat kids suffering from glaucoma

A Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research doctor has devised a technique for children suffering from glaucoma.

Through the technique, standard intraocular lens can be safely implanted in eyes with long term stability to give these children hope for vision.

“These children have eyes that are much larger than normal. All the intraocular lens available in the market are designed for normal or small eyes. So till now there was no way that such children could be rehabilitated with the intraocular lens,” he said.

He added that performing cataract surgery on children is different than doing the same on adults. “Vision lost in childhood is very difficult to restore. But it is very important to give children a clear vision. The number of these kind of patients is very few,” he said.

Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to eye’s optic nerve and gets worse over time. It happens when fluid builds up in the front part of eye. This extra fluid increases the pressure in eye and damages the optic nerve.
