Here’s why you should stop treating Google as your doctor

Trust your doctor more than Google. (Photo: Thinkstock) Trust your doctor more than Google. (Photo: Thinkstock)

Are you among those who log in to Google every time you are down with body ache, fever or cold, only to get more confused and scared? Many young Indians with smartphones in their hands are falling prey to the “Google-as-your-doctor” phenomenon and the dangerous trend is on the rise in the country, health experts feel.

Although there is nothing wrong in checking your symptoms or trying to find more about your illness on the internet, they say that one should know where to stop.

The ideal situation is to use search engines only when someone is diagnosed with a certain medical condition and wants to know more about it. The information available on internet should be used to educate oneself rather than trying to find a cure for the disease.

“The biggest problem is that internet is loaded with enormous information which could be correct too but then your symptoms could be similar to some other disease which may cause confusion. Therefore, correct diagnosis of your health abnormality is very important,” Dr. Satnam Singh Chhabra, head (neuro-spine surgeon) at the Sir Gangaram Hospital here, told IANS.

He has observed many young Indian adults getting hooked to the internet to look for every little thing, even self-diagnosis.

For instance, if one has a health abnormality, then the instant reaction is to Google the symptoms before seeing an expert or a doctor.

“But one should be careful as people normally look for symptoms to get rid of curiosity and anxiety but to the contrary, it just worsens the scenario and leaves them more anxious,” Chhabra said.

According to Dr. (Prof) Raju Vaishya, senior consultant (orthopaedic and joint replacement surgeon) at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, one should beware of getting trapped into “Google as your doctor” behaviour as this may cause more harm than good.

“Yes, there is an increasing surge in young Indians with smartphones who google common health symptoms. I find more such patients coming to me with queries related to hand, wrist and elbow,” Vaishya told IANS.

Dr. R K Singal of the BLK Super-specialty Hospital had an interesting case study to share: “Once a patient in his mid-30s came to me with severe headache. He told me that he thought he had a brain tumour. After diagnosis, we found that headache was due to prolonged sore throat and rhinopharyngitis (common cold).”

“The patient visited me after a month of self-diagnosis through internet. Whatever he found on the internet made him believe that he had a brain tumour,” Singal told IANS.

According to Singal, people in the 25-40 age group are more hooked on to the internet and such self-diagnosis only increases one’s anxiety.

Dr. Rahul Gupta, senior neuro and spine surgeon at Fortis Hospital in Noida, is attending to many young Indians who come to him with weird health queries after scanning Google.

“Self-medication via the internet can be dangerous. Patients at times do not follow our advice and waste our time with silly questions,” he stressed.

According to Gupta, Google is good when it comes to searching for a good doctor, checking spellings of a medication and reading about general health-related issues.

Another danger of self-diagnosis is that you may think that there is more wrong with you than there actually is.

“For example, if you had insomnia, inattention and depression, you may believe that you have a sleep disorder or major depression. Thus, you may make things worse by worrying more as well,” Singal noted.

Self-diagnosis is also a problem when you are in a state of denial about your symptoms.

One may think that generalised body aches started with a worsening of mood, but a doctor may elect to do an electrocardiogram for chest pain that reveals possible coronary artery disease, the experts felt.

Are health websites trustworthy when it comes to answering health symptom queries?

“I don’t see any harm in doing that because it’s about your health after all. In fact, a lot of times my patients come back with queries after surfing about their health abnormality on the internet,” Chhabra said.

So, educate yourself as much before or after you visit your doctor, but let the experts do their job. Let your doctor prescribe you a treatment well-suited for your ailment.

“One should be wise enough to understand which is an authentic website with relevant content as there are a lot of paid sites which exist only to make business,” Chhabra advised.

Vaishya asked youngsters to share their internet-acquired knowledge with the doctor but not to force it upon the doctor to follow it.

“Trust your doctor more than Google,” Gupta summed up.

Avoid midnight munchies: It may impair memory, learning

Eating at the wrong time also disrupts sleep patterns. (Photo: Thinkstock) Eating at the wrong time also disrupts sleep patterns. (Photo: Thinkstock)

Frequent late-night kitchen raids for snacks may impair your memory and learning skills, according to a new study which found that the habit could alter the brain’s physiology.

Eating at times normally reserved for sleep causes a deficiency in the type of learning and memory controlled by the hippocampal area of the brain, researchers said.

“We have provided the first evidence that taking regular meals at the wrong time of day has far-reaching effects for learning and memory,” said Dawn Loh from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

The team tested the ability of mice to recognise a novel object. Mice regularly fed during their sleep-time were significantly less able to recall the object.

Long-term memory was also dramatically reduced, demonstrated during a fear conditioning experiment.

Both long-term memory and the ability to recognise a novel object are governed by the hippocampus.

The hippocampus plays an important role in our ability to associate senses and emotional experiences with memory and our ability to organise and store new memories.

During an experience, nerve impulses are activated along specific pathways and, if we repeat the experience, the same pathways increase in strength.

However, this effect was reduced when food was made available to mice during a six-hour window in the middle of their normal sleep time instead of a six-hour daytime window when the mice were active.

Some genes involved in both the circadian clock and in learning and memory are regulated by a protein called CREB (cAMP response element-binding protein).

When CREB is less active, it decreases memory, and may play a role in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

In the mice fed at the wrong time, the total activity of CREB throughout the hippocampus was significantly reduced, with the strongest effects in the day.

However, the master pacemaker of the circadian system, the suprachiasmatic nucleus located in the hypothalamus, is unaffected.

This leads to desynchrony between the clocks in the different brain regions (misalignment), which the researchers suggest underlies the memory impairment.

“Modern schedules can lead us to eat around the clock so it is important to understand how the timing of food can impact cogitation”, said Christopher Colwell from UCLA.

“For the first time, we have shown that simply adjusting the time when food is made available alters the molecular clock in the hippocampus and can alter the cognitive performance of mice,” Colwell said.

Eating at the wrong time also disrupted sleep patterns. It resulted in the loss of the normal day/night difference in the amount of sleep although the total time spent asleep over 24 hours was not changed.

Sleep became fragmented, with the mice grabbing more short naps throughout the day and night.

The study was published in the journal eLife.

How eating ‘healthy’ food can make you fat

indulge yourself The findings suggest that the recent increase of healthy food labels may be ironically contributing to the obesity epidemic rather than reducing it. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Eating too much is typically considered as one of the prime reasons for obesity but when people eat what they consider to be healthy food, they eat more than the recommended serving size because they associate “healthy” with less filling, say researchers, including one of Indian-origin.

The findings suggest that the recent increase of healthy food labels may be ironically contributing to the obesity epidemic rather than reducing it. Raj Raghunathan from University of Texas at Austin, and colleagues utilised a multi-method approach to investigate the “healthy equal to less filling” intuition.

The first study was conducted with 50 undergraduate students at a large public university and employed the well-established Implicit Association Test to provide evidence for an inverse relationship between the concepts of healthy and filling. The second study was a field study conducted with 40 graduate students and measured participants’ hunger levels after consuming a cookie that is either portrayed as healthy or unhealthy to test the effect of health portrayals on experienced hunger levels.

The third study was conducted with 72 undergraduate students in a realistic scenario to measure the impact of health portrayals on the amount of food ordered before watching a short film and the actual amount of food consumed during the film. The set of three studies converges on the idea that consumers hold an implicit belief that healthy foods are less filling than unhealthy foods.

The researchers demonstrated that portraying a food as healthy as opposed to unhealthy using a front-of-package nutritional scale impacts consumer judgment and behaviour. Surprisingly, even consumers who said they disagree with the idea that healthy foods are less filling than unhealthy foods are subject to the same biases. The study was published in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research.

A glass of water contains 10 million bacteria! (But it’s all good)

Young Woman Drinking Water by Sea A glass of clean drinking water actually contains 10 million bacteria. But that is how it should be — clean tap water always contains harmless bacteria, researchers said. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

A glass of clean drinking water contains 10 million ‘good’ bacteria, which may help purify the water and keep it safe, a new study has claimed.

Researchers have found that our drinking water is to a large extent purified by millions of “good bacteria” found in water pipes and purification plants. So far, the knowledge about them has been practically non-existent, researchers said. A glass of clean drinking water actually contains 10 million bacteria. But that is how it should be — clean tap water always contains harmless bacteria, researchers said.

These bacteria and other microbes grow in the drinking water treatment plant and on the inside of our water pipes, which can be seen in the form of a thin, sticky coating — a so-called biofilm. All surfaces from the raw water intake to the tap are covered in this biofilm. These findings show that the diversity of species of bacteria in water pipes is huge, and that bacteria may play a larger role than previously thought.

Among other things, the researchers suspect that a large part of water purification takes place in the pipes and not only in water purification plants. “A previously completely unknown ecosystem has revealed itself to us. Formerly, you could hardly see any bacteria at
all and now, thanks to techniques such as massive DNA sequencing and flow cytometry, we suddenly see eighty thousand bacteria per millilitre in drinking water,” said Catherine Paul from Lund University in Sweden.

At least a couple of thousand different species live in the water pipes. According to the researchers there is a connection between the composition of bacteria and water quality. “We suspect there are ‘good’ bacteria that help purify the water and keep it safe – similar to what happens in our bodies. Our intestines are full of bacteria, and most of the time when we are healthy, they help us digest our food and
fight illness,” said Paul. Although the research was conducted in southern Sweden, bacteria and biofilms are found all over the world, in
plumbing, taps and water pipes.

This knowledge will be very useful for countries when updating and improving their water pipe systems, researchers said. “The hope is that we eventually may be able to control the composition and quality of water in the water supply to steer the growth of ‘good’ bacteria that can help purify the water even more efficiently than today,” said Paul. The research was published in the journal Microbes and Environments.

Vitamin D levels may have nothing to do with sleepless nights

sleep apnoea wikimedia commons 2 Though the study focused on obese participants, researchers found no evidence to support a link between vitamin D deficiency and increased risk of sleep apnoea in non-obese study participants either. (Source: Wikimedia Commons)

Contradicting common perception, researchers have found that low levels of vitamin D — also known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’ — does not cause or worsen sleep apnoea.

Sleep apnoea causes repeated awakenings and pauses in breathing during the night. Obesity appears to contribute to the adverse effects.

“The link between obesity and vitamin D deficiency can be explained in a number of ways — one of which is that obese individuals are less likely to be physically active — thereby limiting their sun exposure,” said senior investigator Ken Kunisaki, associate professor of medicine at University of Minnesota in the US.

“Although our study was not designed to figure out why obese people have lower vitamin D levels, our results ultimately suggest that low vitamin D levels do not cause or worsen sleep apnoea,” Kunisaki said.

The study involved a cohort of 2,827 participants who were generally healthy and elderly males with an average age of 76.4 years.

“Taking additional vitamin D supplements is not likely to prevent or improve sleep apnoea,” Kunisaki said.

The researchers also found no evidence to support a link between vitamin D deficiency and increased risk of sleep apnoea in non-obese study participants.

The study appeared in the journal Annals of the American Thoracic Society.

Keep yourself fit and healthy this winter with these superfoods

Stock up on these basic ingredients this winter. (Source: Punjabtribune.com)

From humble turmeric powder and Bugs Bunny’s favourite carrots to adding oodles of dark chocolate to your diet, you can keep yourself fit and healthy this winter season by stocking up some easy-to-find superfoods.

Sonia Narang, nutrition expert, Oriflame India, lists out some superfoods to fight winter blues:

* Maca root – Ashwagandha root is a herb of the ages. It is the ginseng of ayurvedic medicine, the traditional medicine of India and is considered an adaptogen — a term used to describe herbs that improve physical energy and athletic ability, increase immunity and help fight the infections and increase sexual capacity and fertility.

* Turmeric – It has a global reputation for boosting immunity. It acts as an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral agent and helps in boosting the overall functioning of our immune system. It can be taken in warm milk for its best benefits.

* Chia seeds – These powerful seeds are an amazing source of protein, omega 3 fatty acids and important minerals. It is best taken when soaked in water overnight.

* Carrots – This root vegetable contains high amounts of beta carotene which the body converts into Vitamin A. Vitamin A is a key nutrient in immune function, helping to protect against infection and reduce the risk and duration of respiratory illness by keeping our lungs healthy. It is an excellent food to protect the skin from ageing.

* Garlic – It has been used for thousands of years in the treatment of illness and disease. Its compound called allicin has potent medicinal properties which helps combat sickness, cold and cough.

* Fennel – This licorice-tasting winter vegetable offers more than just a unique tang. Fennel is low in calories yet high in phytonutrient anethole, which may help boost the immune response.

* Beetroot – It is packed with beneficial phytochemicals and antioxidants which protect the immune system by fighting off destructive free radicals, which harm healthy cells and their DNA.

* Dark chocolate – Cocoa-based dark chocolate is one of the best natural sources of antioxidants, iron, magnesium and zinc. Zinc, an important trace mineral, is important for immune function.

You can’t be a ‘fat but fit’ man

Jogging Men of a normal weight — regardless of their fitness level — are at lower risk of death compared to obese individuals in the highest quarter of aerobic fitness. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Dismissing the concept of ‘fat but fit’, a new study has found that the protective effects of high fitness against early death are reduced in obese men.

Men of a normal weight — regardless of their fitness level — are at lower risk of death compared to obese individuals in the highest quarter of aerobic fitness, the findings showed.

This study by researchers from Umea University in Sweden followed 1,317,713 men for a median average of 29 years to examine the association between aerobic fitness and death later in life, as well as how obesity affected these results.

“The risk of early death was higher in fit obese individuals than in unfit normal-weight individuals,” the study said.

The aerobic fitness of the participants was tested by asking them to cycle till they had to stop due to fatigue.

Men with top level of aerobic fitness had a 48 per cent lower risk of death from any cause compared with those in the lowest levels. Stronger associations were observed for deaths related to suicide and abuse of alcohol and narcotics. Unexpectedly, the authors noted a strong association between low aerobic fitness and also deaths related to trauma.

“We could only speculate, but genetic factors could have influenced these associations given that aerobic fitness is under strong genetic control,” study co-author Peter Nordstrom said.

However, the researchers found that the beneficial effect of high aerobic fitness was actually reduced with increased obesity — and in those with extreme obesity there was no significant effect at all.

The study appeared in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

Eat 14g of almonds daily to boost your health

The scientists based their conclusions about improved dietary intake on participants’ scores on the Healthy Eating Index. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Eating a moderate amount of almonds daily can enrich the diets of adults and young children, says a new study.

“Almonds are a good source of plant protein — essential fatty acids, vitamin E and magnesium,” said one of the researchers Alyssa Burns from University of Florida in the US. For the 14-week study, the scientists gave almonds daily to 29 pairs of parents and children. Most of the adults were mothers with an average age of 35, while their children were between three and six years of age.

The children were encouraged to consume 14g of almond butter daily and parents were given 14g of almonds per day. An online dietary recall was used to find out what adults had eaten and how much. That way, researchers could measure diet quality.

The scientists based their conclusions about improved dietary intake on participants’ scores on the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), a tool used to measure diet quality and adherence to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The results indicated that when parents and children were eating almonds, their HEI increased for total protein foods, seafood and plant proteins and fatty acids, while they ate fewer empty calories.

For all components, a higher score indicates higher diet quality. When parents and children ate almonds, their HEI score increased from 53.7 to 61.4. Parents and children consumed more vitamin E and magnesium when eating almonds, Burns noted. The study was published in the journal Nutrition Research.

Have fish oil to burn those kilos around your belly

Omega3 capsules People have long said that food from Japan and the Mediterranean contribute to longevity, but why these cuisines are beneficial was up for debate. Now we have better insight into why that may be. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Fish oil may burn fat faster than those fat-burning pills, leading to efficient weight loss in overweight or obese people in their 30s and 40s, Kyoto University researchers report.

Fish oil activates receptors in the digestive tract, fires the sympathetic nervous system and induces storage cells to metabolise fat.

Fat tissues do not all store fat. So called “white” cells store fat in order to maintain energy supply while “brown” cells metabolise fat to maintain a stable body temperature.

Brown cells are abundant in babies but decrease in number with maturity into adulthood.

A third type of fat cell — “beige” cells — have recently been found in humans and mice, and have shown to function much like brown cells.

Beige cells also reduce in number as people approach middle age — and without these metabolising cells, fat continues accumulating for decades without ever being used.

“We knew from previous research that fish oil has tremendous health benefits, including the prevention of fat accumulation. We tested whether fish oil and an increase in beige cells could be related,” said senior author Teruo Kawada.

The team fed a group of mice fatty food, and other groups fatty food with fish oil additives.

The mice that ate food with fish oil, they found, gained 5-10 % less weight and 15-25 % less fat compared to those that did not consume the oil.

The team also found that beige cells formed from white fat cells when the sympathetic nervous system was activated, meaning that certain fat storage cells acquired the ability to metabolise.

“People have long said that food from Japan and the Mediterranean contribute to longevity, but why these cuisines are beneficial was up for debate. Now we have better insight into why that may be,” explained Kawada in a paper which appeared in the journal Scientific Reports.

Know about Trigeminal Neuralgia: The suicide disease

The pain caused due to Trigeminal Neuralgia has been described as if someone is giving the sufferer an electric shock or blasting a bomb on their face. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is considered by many to be among the most excruciatingly painful conditions known to mankind that causes a sudden, sharp and stabbing pain to one side of the face. The pain cannot be described in words and yet many sufferers express it by using their imagination as someone giving them an electric shock or blasting a bomb on their face. Since it is a chronic condition of acute, ‘out of the blue’ episodes of unbearable and agonising pain, countless people, out of sheer frustration have committed suicide before treatments (and cure) were discovered. That is the reason why it is also known as ‘The Suicide Disease’.

An estimated one in 15,000 people suffers from trigeminal neuralgia, but in all likelihood, the numbers may be significantly higher due to frequent misdiagnoses. It usually develops after the age of 40 (though, it can also happen to children and younger adults) and affects more women than men, in perhaps 2:1 ratio. Since TN happens due to compression of the trigeminal nerve, which is one of our cranial nerves, by blood vessels, to understand the disease one must know a bit about what is a ‘nerve’ and ‘what is a cranial nerve’ for that one must glimpse into the world of our brain. Because understanding the basics of any disease gives us the power to seek the right doctors, discuss your problems, choose the treatment if there are options and finally cope with the entire process without fear and speculations.

Understanding the human brain isn’t easy and even the most renowned philosophers, researchers as well as neurosurgeons are still at work to know more. But we do know that it gives us capacity to be artists, create, speak and write complex languages, pass moral judgements, harbour hate for generations and even die young for love. Most importantly, it stores memories, thus, making our lives memorable.

Amazingly, as we go through our life, our brain even decodes the old memories in the light of new experiences and helps us find new meanings. I read somewhere that God created humans because HE wanted someone with ‘brains’ to admire the universe HE had created. As a woman columnist I would even argue why God is always referred as HE? And my questioning mind is also a part of my human brain.

brain-nerves_759_ThinkstockPhotos-502880319

Understanding the brain

The human brain with its (literary) infinite ability is (figuratively) just a jellylike substance of fat and protein weighing less than one and half kilograms. It has 100 billion or 10,000 crore neurons (brain cells) forming an elaborate communication network, that not only puts together our mind and its thought process as well as highly coordinated physical actions but it also regulates involuntary processes, such as hormonal regulations, digestion and breathing. Neurons or the brain cells are a part of our central (brain) as well as the peripheral (periphery of the body) nervous system. It has a body cell and an axon (a long fibre that carries messages via electrical impulses).

Unlike the neurone, nerves (that need to reach even the remote parts of our body) are a part of peripheral nervous system. They are made of bundles of axons. These bundles carry the messages to and from the brain from each and every cell, tissue, muscle and organ of our body, 24×7, every hour, every minute, every second and every millisecond.

These axons are packed so carefully that one cannot but admire the Mother Nature. A typical nerve has fibrous axons protected by a tough outer covering. Since the messages travel as electrical impulses, insulation is vital to avoid short circuits that can spell disaster. Each axon within these bundles is further wrapped by a myelin sheath made of special insulating cells to keep the nervous impulses insulated.

Millions of connections

Most large nerves are mixed nerves, containing both motor (that carry messages from the brain to the body) and sensory (that carry messages from the body to the brain) nerve fibres running to and from a particular region of the body. Without the brain’s orders that are carried through these nerves we cannot as much flex the muscles of our toes.

The trigeminal nerve is the largest and most complex of the 12 cranial nerves (CNs). CNs originate from brain stem (a part between the brain and the spinal cord) and play an important role in stretching of the jaw muscles, chewing, swallowing, heart rate deceleration and even all-important breathing. ‘CNs’ are also the communication network between the brain and the ears, eyes, nose, throat, tongue and skin on our face and scalp. The ‘trigeminal nerve’ is the fifth of twelve pairs of cranial nerves enervating (supplying nerves) the face and head, and has three divisions that enervate the forehead and eye, cheek and lower part of the face as well as the jaw. The trigeminal nerves function in sensing facial touch, pain and temperature, as well as controlling muscles used for chewing.

TN-disease_759

Let us ask some vital questions to Dr Jaydev Panchwagh, an eminent Neurosurgeon from Pune (Maharashtra) with special interest in treating Trigeminal Neuralgia. For the last 12 years it has been his mission to take brain & spine surgery to the masses.

What are the reasons of TN?
Dr JP: It happens when the trigeminal nerve is disturbed, compressed or for some reason loses its insulation. In most of the cases the problem is contact between a normal blood vessel and the trigeminal nerve at the base of our brain. This contact puts pressure on the nerve causing excruciating pain. TN can also occur as a result of ageing, or it can be related to multiple sclerosis or a similar disorder that damages the myelin sheath protecting certain nerves. In a few cases, trigeminal neuralgia can be caused by a tumour putting pressure on the trigeminal nerve. In other cases, brain lesions, brain abnormalities, surgical injuries, stroke or facial trauma may be responsible for trigeminal neuralgia.

Can you tell us the symptoms?
Dr JP: Episodes of severe, shooting or jabbing pain that may feel like an electric shock. These can be spontaneous or triggered by things such as touching the face, chewing, speaking and brushing teeth and may last from a few seconds to several minutes. Some patients experience constant aching, burning feeling that’s less severe than the spasm-like pain. The areas of pain are the areas supplied by the trigeminal nerve, including the cheek, jaw, teeth, gums, lips, or less often the eye and forehead. It is a pain affecting one side of the face at a time, though TN may rarely affect both sides of the face, it could be in one spot or spread in a wider pattern. Sometimes the attacks become more frequent and intense over time.

The symptoms vary. Why?
Dr JP: There are three types of TN, the most common being the ‘Typical TN’. Most of the cases of typical TN are caused by blood vessels compressing the trigeminal nerve root as it enters the brain stem. Then there is ‘Atypical TN’ that is characterised by constant and severe aching, boring or burning pain over and above the otherwise sudden and acute pain of ‘Typical TN’. Then there is what is called the Pre-TN symptoms. Days to years before the first attack of TN pain, some sufferers experience odd sensations in the trigeminal distributions destined to become affected by TN. These odd sensations of pain, (such as a toothache) or discomfort like pins and needles. When the first attack of true TN occurs, it is very distinct from pre-TN symptoms.

Does the pain happens all of a sudden or there are some triggers?
Dr JP: Ha! That’s the tragedy of TN. A variety of triggers may set off the pain of trigeminal neuralgia, including simple daily chores like shaving, touching the face, eating, drinking, brushing the teeth, talking, washing the face and even life’s little pleasures like smiling, encountering cool breeze, and putting on makeup. This makes the patient very fearful, unsure and depressed.

TN is also called ‘The Suicide Disease’. Is it true? Do the people want to end their lives?
Dr JP: I shall tell you an incidence that shook me. It’s a real story of a middle aged man who came to me as a patient. He was dishevelled, had not shaved for days and looked as if he had given up on life. I noticed a shabby looking bag dangling from his right shoulder with his right hand was immersed in it as if he was holding something that the bag contained his dear life. As he sat down, he produced an ominous looking bottle from the bag and placed it on my table. It was a bottle of insecticide! He said with a voice shadowed by a tinge of finality ‘Well, doc, please tell me you can cure my pain because, otherwise the alternative is to drink the contents of this bottle and die.’

To cut the story short, he was suffering from severe TN which had started about six years back. He was having severe stabbing pain on the right side of his face which would be brought about merely by trying to open his mouth.

(More in next part where Dr Panchwagh would tell us what happened to this patient, as well as other treatment options)

The healthy secret in Japanese diet – seaweed

Seaweed, edible algae from the sea such as agar, alginates, carrageenan and nori, are popular delicacies in some Asian cuisines and are an integral part of Japanese diet, particularly Sushi. They also play an important role in modulating chronic diseases as they are rich in special bioactive compounds which are not found in regular agricultural produce.

Seaweeds are also impressive in their nutrient profile. They are rich in fibre, essential amino acids, omega-3 fats and vitamins A, B, C and E. Seaweed are the only vegetarian source of vitamin B12, recommended for effective functioning of the nervous system and as treatment for the effects of aging, chronic fatigue syndrome, and anaemia.

A study reported that 100 gm of seaweed provides more than the daily requirement of vitamins A, B12, and two-thirds of the vitamin C requirement. Major minerals found in seaweed include sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium along with certain trace minerals such as iron, zinc, manganese and copper. Seaweeds are one of the most important vegetarian sources of calcium especially useful for vegans, pregnant women, adolescents, and the elderly.

The fibre content in seaweeds is impressive and in fact is higher than most fruits and vegetables, weight by weight. The fibre present in seaweed is soluble, which helps in lowering cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels besides improving digestion. Besides nutritional benefits, seaweeds have been found to have anti-cancer, anti-infective, anti-clotting and anti-inflammatory benefits. Seaweed has received significant attention by scientists as it is a novel source of compounds with several applications in human health. It is also being put in the category of functional foods.

Interestingly, a compound present in Seaweed called Fuco-xanthin has been found to have anti-obesity ie fat burning effects and may potentially modulate the expression of the fat burning genes and control appetite. A recent study reported that fucoxanthin extract suppressed body weight gain and improved lipid metabolism.Low in calories, high in protein, nutrients and special bio-active compounds, seaweeds certainly offer an alternative food address nutritional challenges being faced by us. It’s no surprise that the Japanese are one of the healthiest and slimmest nations in the world with abundance of seaweed in their food.

Parent-led autism therapy successfully tried out in India, Pakistan

To help parents interact better with autistic children, researchers have adapted a treatment which can be delivered by non-specialist health workers in India and Pakistan. This mode of treatment, first tried in Manchester in United Kingdom, has already been successfully tested in Goa and Rawalpindi.

The study — Effectiveness of the Parent-mediated intervention for children with Autism Spectrum disorder in South Asia in India and Pakistan (PASS) — was published in The Lancet Psychiatry Journal on December 16. This is the first time a form of treatment, which is allowed to be delivered by non-specialist health workers in south Asian communities, has been adapted.

“This is a first as researchers from an Indian NGO, Goa-based Sangath, have collaborated with universities of Manchester and Liverpool and partners in Pakistan to adapt a parent-led autism therapy and successfully tested it at Goa and Rawalpindi, with the aim of improving treatment for an estimated 5 million children in the region with the disorder,” said lead author of the study, Professor Jonathan Green from the University of Manchester.

Autism is one of the world’s fastest growing developmental challenges; it affects up to 70 million people and has a severe effect on the social development of children. In developed countries, children are able to receive specialised treatment to improve their interaction with their families. But such specialised treatment is not available in many parts of India.

As part of the Autism Speaks Global Autism Public Health Initiative, researchers adapted a leading UK therapy method known as PACT, which help parents interact better with their autistic child, said Dr Gauri Divan, clinical lead of the study in India.

The method known as PASS was taught to non-specialist health workers in Goa, along with their counterparts in Rawalpindi in Pakistan, who in turn worked with parents of 32 autistic children who were part of the trial.

“It took two researchers — one from India and a child psychiatrist, Ayesha Minhas, from Pakistan — to adapt this intervention strategy” said Divan, a paediatrician from Goa.

“We have no experience in dealing with autistic children, but this programme gave us the opportunity to meet the challenges and then adapt it to our own cultural situation. I went on to train three graduates (non-specialist health workers) in Goa and Ayesha trained three others in Pakistan. They approached parents of these children and taught them therapeutic strategies,” explained Dr Divan.

As many as 65 children with autism spectrum disorder, aged between 2 and 9 years, were involved in the study. While 32 children were included in the intervention arm — a 12-session package over eight months — 33 were included in the control arm and they continued regular treatment for autism.

Children with autism spectrum disorder find it very difficult to communicate their feelings. So the relationship between the mother and the child is all about commands, instead of to-and-fro communication, pointed out Divan.

“Our strategy involved observing the child and picking up weak communication signals. It could be something very basic like a child who wants to play with a toy but is unable to express that to his mother. So, we recorded a video of the mother and child playing together and analysed how she was not able to pick up the signals. We got her back on track and the parent did not get too stressed about what the child wants. This also improves the child’s confidence level,” said Divan.

The therapy was delivered in the parents’ first language. The treatment began with a session on the causes of this condition and misconceptions about it.

At the end of the 12-week period, the children underwent assessments using recognised methods and were found to be more likely to initiate communication with their parents compared to the comparison group, said Dr Vikram Patel, one of the principal investigators of the study and Professor of International Mental Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK.

“This pioneering study shows us that it is possible to implement high-quality evidence-based intervention in low-resource communities, even when there are few or no specialists,” said Andy Shih, vice-president of scientific affairs in Autism Speaks.

Bid adieu to cramps during your periods

Get respite from the monthly menstrual cramps by using a hot water bag on your lower abdomen and lower back, and by avoiding dairy products, meats and legumes as these can cause bloating and worsen the pain, says an expert.

Indira Ganeshan, director of capital-based Irene IVF Centre, has shared how to ease the pain:

* Hot water bag on your lower abdomen and lower back, and taking a hot shower offers instant pain relief.

* Drinking teas like ginger tea, jasmine tea and chamomile is not only anti-inflammatory, but also keeps you well hydrated to tackle the blood loss. Girls who have water retention can try dandelion tea.

* Take supplements like vitamin B, E, C and Folates, which help in relieving the menstrual pain.

* Consume a diet rich in fiber like fruits and green leafy vegetables which has high content of vitamins and anti-oxidants. An intake of Aloe Vera juice and papaya is very helpful for the cramps.

* Avoid dairy products, meats and legumes as these cause bloating and worsen the cramps.

* Avoid coffee, as caffeine increases gastritis and causes anxiety and may increase cramping as it constricts the blood vessels.

* Avoid alcohol and smoking.

* Light exercise and soft yogic posture and stretching will provide relief from body pain associated with cramps.

* Indulging in massages can be very relaxing and relieve cramps. Lavender oil application in lower abdomen is also very helpful.

* Acupressure is said to help girls tide over the rough time, and provide relief from cramps.

* Painkillers like Acetaminophen (paracetamol), Mefanemic acid can help the girls in relieving cramps and also decrease the amount of blood that is lost.

* Oral contraceptive pills: Girls who are resistant to home therapies and other alternate therapies can consult a gynaecologist for trial of oral contraceptives, which causes the cycle to become anovulatory and thus prevent the cramps.

Want to avoid gaining weight? Chew your food slowly

Training your kids to chew food slowly can be an inexpensive and easy way to help them stay in shape, suggests new research.

Waiting 30 seconds in between bites of food allows children to realise when they are full and avoid overeating —hence preventing excessive weight gain — the study said.

“To lose weight, you need to stop eating. But it is not that simple for most people,” said study co-author Marcos Intaglietta from the University of California, San Diego in the US.

“So we decided to investigate how effective eating slowly would be,” Intaglietta noted.

The study monitored the eating habits of 54 children aged between 6-17 years in the city of Durango, Mexico for a year. The students were compared to a control group with similar demographics.

The students were divided into two groups: those who ate slowly as instructed by researchers — called the compliant group — and those who did not — called the non-compliant group. These two groups were compared to a control group.

The results were striking. The weight of the students in the compliant group decreased anywhere from 2-5.7 per cent after six months and 3.4-4.8 per cent after one year. By contrast, the weight of the students in the non-compliant group increased by 4.4-5.8 per cent after six months and 8.3-12.6 per cent after a year. The weight of the control group increased by 6.5-8.2 per cent after one year.

The slow eating approach has the advantage of being sustainable over the long term — unlike most diets — because it doesn’t require you to change what you eat on a daily basis, study co-author Geert Schmid-Schonbein from the University of California, San Diego said.

The findings appeared in the journal Pediatric Obesity.
