That lingering unhealthy feeling can predict early death too

One’s subjective health experience also determines mortality rate. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Not just chronic medical conditions and unhealthy lifestyle, psychological factors such as decline in memory or just feeling unhealthy are also likely to elevate the risk of early death mortality rate especially in the middle-aged and the elderly.

The result of the longitudinal study of over 6,000 adults revealed that better perceived health and smaller decreases in processing speed over time could help reduce mortality risk. “Our study shows that two psychological variables — lower self-rated health and age-related decrements in processing speed — appear to be especially important indicators of elevated mortality risk in middle-aged and older adults,” said Stephen Aichele, scientist at University of Geneva in Switzerland.

Being a woman was also linked with reduced mortality risk, while years of smoking tobacco was connected with an increased risk of early death.

The findings — published in the journal Psychological Science — may provide useful insights for health professionals, who need better methods for identifying individuals at risk of early death, the researchers noted.

The researchers investigated the relative influence of cognitive, demographic, health, and lifestyle variables in predicting mortality risk from the Manchester Longitudinal Study of Cognition’s data collected for 29 years from 6,203 adults who ranged in age from 41 to 96-years-old when the study began.

Participants’ subjective reports of various lifestyle factors — including perceived health, number of prescribed medicines, sleep patterns, hobbies, leisure activities, and social interactions — were also examined.

Be acne-free: Here’s how to use lemon for flawless skin

Lemon can be your new best friend! (Photo: Thinkstock) Lemon can be your new best friend! (Photo: Thinkstock)

Squeeze lemon and apply on your skin or mix it with natural ingredients like honey, yoghurt and chickpea to get rid of acne that often leaves unsightly scars on face.

Dr Aakriti Mehra, consultant dermatologist, Enhance Clinics, shares some tips:

Lemon juice application: Take lemon juice in a small bowl, soak a cotton ball in it and squeeze out the excess juice from it. Apply the lemon juice to the acne-affected area. Leave it on the skin for 10 minutes or till the lemon juice dries out completely. Rinse the area with water, and then pat dry with a clean towel. Repeat this remedy twice every day.

Lemon juice and honey: Take lemon juice and honey in a bowl and mix well. Apply this mixture to the acne-affected area with your finger tips and leave it for five minutes. Wash the area with water and pat dry with a clean towel. Follow this remedy once a day.

Lemon and egg white mask: Take an egg and separate the white portion of it. Add two tablespoons of lemon juice to it and whisk well. Divide the mixture into three parts. Apply the first layer of the mixture to the skin and leave for five to seven minutes and then apply the second layer. After five to seven minutes, apply the third layer to the acne. After five to seven minutes, clean the area with warm water, and then pat the skin dry. Follow this remedy regularly.

Lemon and chickpea: Take the chickpea powder in a small bowl and squeeze the lemon juice on it. Mix the ingredients well to make a smooth paste. Apply it on the acne-affected skin and leave for a few minutes. Rinse the area with lukewarm water and wipe the skin with a clean towel. You can apply your regular moisturizer to your skin if you feel that it has become very dry. Use this remedy once on a daily basis.

Lemon and yoghurt: Take lemon juice and yoghurt in a bowl and mix well to make a paste. Apply this paste on the acne-affected area with your fingertips. Leave it on the skin for a few minutes, and then wash the area with water. Repeat this process regularly.

Oral bacteria may be a cause of esophageal cancer: Study

 P. gingivalis infection can cause esophageal cancer. (Photo: Thinkstock) P. gingivalis infection can cause esophageal cancer. (Photo: Thinkstock)

Gum diseases are linked to many health problems. A type of bacterial species responsible for gum disease may also be a cause of esophageal cancer, finds a new study.

The findings, published in the journal Infectious Agents and Cancer, showed the bacteria Porphyromonas gingival is present in 61 percent patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).

“These findings provide the first direct evidence that P. gingivalis infection could be a novel risk factor for ESCC and may also serve as a prognostic biomarker for this type of cancer,” said Huizhi Wang from the University of Louisville’s school of dentistry in the US.

“These data, if confirmed, indicate that eradication of a common oral pathogen may contribute to a reduction in the significant number of people suffering with ESCC,” Wang added.

The esophagus is a muscular tube, critical to the movement of food from the mouth to the stomach.

For the study, researchers tested tissue samples from 100 patients with ESCC and 30 normal controls.

The results showed both the bacteria-distinguishing enzyme and its DNA were significantly higher in the cancerous tissue of ESCC patients than in surrounding tissue or normal control sites.

The researchers also found the presence of P. gingivalis correlated with other factors, including cancer cell differentiation, metastasis and overall survival rate.

There are two likely explanations: either ESCC cells are a preferred niche for P. gingivalis to thrive or the infection of P. gingivalis facilitates the development of esophageal cancer, Wang explained.

If the former is true, Wang said, simple antibiotics may prove useful or researchers can develop other therapeutic approaches for esophageal cancer utilising genetic technology to target the P. gingivalis and ultimately destroy the cancer cells.

“It would suggest that improving oral hygiene may reduce ESCC risk; screening for P. gingivalis in dental plaque may identify susceptible subjects; and using antibiotics or other anti-bacterial strategies may prevent ESCC progression,” Wang added.

New malaria vaccine generates robust immune response

mosquitoes blood sucking on human skin While the vaccine candidate did not prevent malaria infection, it did significantly delay parasitemia in 59 per cent of vaccinated subjects. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

A new malaria vaccine candidate has been found to generate robust immune response while significantly delaying arasitemia in 59 per cent of vaccinated subjects, according to a first-of-its-kind in-human study.

Plasmodium vivax malaria is challenging to control because it can be dormant, causing no symptoms, and then become active causing symptomatic malaria weeks to months after initial infection. The vaccine candidate, developed by researchers at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in the US and tested jointly with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to prevent vivax malaria infection, is the first in-human study of its kind under an investigational new drug application with the US Food and Drug Administration.

WRAIR researchers immunised 30 volunteers with three doses of the vaccine candidate. Immunised volunteers took part in WRAIR’s well-established controlled human malaria infection (CHMI) model where they were bitten by malaria-infected mosquitoes. The efficacy of the vaccine candidate was then determined based on whether or not volunteers developed malaria by looking at blood smears or if it took longer for malaria parasites to appear in the blood.

“This study represents the first vaccine study to test the effectiveness of a P vivax vaccine candidate in humans using controlled human malaria infection,” said Jason W Bennett, the study’s lead investigator. Unlike P falciparum where a CHMI model is well established, the P vivax CHMI model must rely on blood donations from infected humans to initiate infections in mosquitoes. The vaccine candidate was well tolerated in all volunteers and generated robust immune responses. While the vaccine candidate did not prevent malaria infection, it did significantly delay parasitemia in 59 per cent of vaccinated subjects.

Parasitemia is used as a measurement of parasite load in the organism and an indication of the degree of an active parasitic infection. Robert Paris, director of the US Military Malaria Research Programme at WRAIR, said that an improved vaccine can be designed. “Findings from the analysis of the immune response of vaccinated subjects have given us clues to improve vaccine candidates and studies are now underway at WRAIR to develop next generation vivax vaccines,” said Paris.

Researchers were also able to demonstrate that individuals with low or absent levels of a specific liver enzyme were unable to convert primaquine, the only FDA-approved drug to treat the dormant stages of vivax malaria, to an active drug form to kill the dormant stage of
the parasites. The findings were published in the journal PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Your obesity is making you more forgetful, says study

obesity, harmful effects of obesity, high body mass index, BMI, memory, episodic memory, overweight, diabetes, heart disease, depression, anxiety, appetite, eating habits, hippocampus, brain, frontal lobe, cognitive deficit, Obesity not only increases the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, depression and anxiety, but also affects episodic memory — making it difficult to regulate food consumption, like in a vicious cycle. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

If you are obese, you are not only at risk of physical and psychological health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, depression and anxiety, but your high body mass index (BMI) is also likely to affect your episodic memory — the ability to recall past events, warns a new study.

A higher BMI was previously found to affect the structural and functional changes in the brain. But, it may also be accompanied by a reduced ability to form and/or retrieve episodic memories and affect the brain’s ability to perform certain cognitive tasks optimally, suggested the researchers.

The results showed that obesity might also impair an individual’s ability to use memory to help regulate consumption. In other words, it is possible that becoming overweight may make it harder for an individual to keep track of what and how much he or she has eaten, potentially making one more likely to overeat. “The possibility that there may be episodic memory deficits in overweight individuals is of concern, especially given the growing evidence that episodic memory may have a considerable influence on feeding behaviour and appetite regulation,” said Lucy Cheke, lecturer at the University.

However, she cautioned that not all overweight people are necessarily forgetful.

But if the results are generalised to memory in everyday life, then it could be that overweight people are less able to vividly relive details of past events — such as their past meals, the researchers explained in the study published in The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology.

Obesity has been previously linked with dysfunction of the hippocampus — an area of the brain involved in memory and learning — and of the frontal lobe — the part of the brain involved in decision-making, problem solving and emotions.

Around 60 per cent of adults in Britain are overweight or obese, a number predicted to rise to approximately 70 per cent by 2034, the researchers noted. “Understanding what drives our consumption and how we instinctively regulate our eating behaviour is becoming more and more important given the rise of obesity in society,” Cheke added.

The researchers tested 50 participants aged 18-35 — with body mass indexes (BMIs) ranging from 18 through to 51. A BMI of 18-25 is considered healthy, 25-30 overweight, and over 30 obese. The participants took part in a memory test known as the ‘Treasure-Hunt Task’, where they were asked to hide items around complex scenes — for example, a desert with palm trees — across two ‘days’. They were then asked to remember which items they had hidden, where they had hidden them and when they were hidden.

Overall, the team found an association between higher BMI and poor performance on the tasks.

How you react to stress decides your overall health, especially your heart

Stress, heart disease, cardiovascular disease, stress reaction, heart health, harmful effects of stress, depression, impact of stress on health, health, dealing with stress, electro-cardiogram, ECG, How you deal with your daily stresses and frustration has a greater impact on your overall health than the nature and frequency of the stresses and frustrations themselves. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

How you perceive and react to stressful events in life is more important to your health than how frequently you encounter stress, says a study.

According to the researchers, the more negatively an individual reacts to a situation, the more he/she may be at risk of developing heart disease. The team wanted to find out whether daily stress and heart rate variability — a measure of autonomic regulation of the heart — are linked. A potential pathway that links stress to future heart disease is a dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) — a case of a person’s normally self-regulated nervous system getting off track.

“Higher heart rate variability is better for health as it reflects the capacity to respond to challenges,” said Nancy L Sin from Pennsylvania State University. “People with lower heart rate variability have a greater risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death,” Sin added in the paper published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine. Depression and major stressful events are known to be harmful for health, but less attention has been paid to the health consequences of frustrations and hassles in everyday life.

The team analysed the data collected from 909 participants between the aged 35-85 — including daily telephone interviews — over eight consecutive days and the results from an electro-cardiogram (ECG). During daily phone interviews, participants were asked to report the stressful events as well as negative emotions they had experienced that day.

The researchers found that participants who reported a lot of stressful events in their lives were not necessarily those who had lower heart rate variability. No matter how many or how few stressful events a person faces, it was those who perceived the events as more stressful — or who experienced a greater spike in negative emotions — had lower heart rate variability. These people may be at a higher risk for heart disease, the authors noted.

Facebook, social media addiction can trigger cocaine-like high: Study

(Source: Thinkstock Images)

Can spending excessive time on Facebook or other social media be as dangerous as addiction to cocaine or gambling?

Well, yes, if researchers from California State University-Fullerton are to be believed.

They say social media obsession may lead to something akin to classical addiction. Such use triggers two key parts of the brain associated with rewards: the amygdala — which is the integrative place for emotions, behaviour and motivation — and the striatum — part of the forebrain and a critical component of the reward system.

The findings — recently published in the journal Psychological Reports: Disability and Trauma — showed that social media-related ‘addictions’ share some neural features with substance and gambling addictions.

Since the meteoric rise of internet usage and emergence of various social media platforms, many young Indians have been left socially isolated and lonely. It’s time for a reality check in our backyard.

Take Krishnan (name changed) — a 15-year-old social media addict in the capital — who recently visited Dr. Sameer Malhotra, director, mental health and behavioural sciences at Max Healthcare. Hooked on to Facebook for nearly 16 hours a day, he had developed an obsessive personality profile and was neglecting priorities of life — including education. “I have been seeing many youngsters who are in the grip of social media addiction. In the case of Krishnan, I treated him through both counselling and medication, which helped channelise his energy in positive work,” said Dr. Malhotra.

“Facebook addiction is similar to cocaine addiction to a certain level as there are certain neuro-chemicals like dopamine which operate across brain reward pathways and are responsible for maintaining addictive behaviour,” he said.

According to Dr. Malhotra, teenagers with Facebook addiction-like symptoms may “have a hyperactive amygdala-striatal system, which makes this ‘addiction’ similar to many other addictions.”

For Dr. Samir Parikh, director at department of mental health and behavioural Science, Fortis Healthcare, excessive use of social media is a common trend today and such preoccupation leads to an interference in one’s social, occupational as well as other areas of functioning. “Yes, it could be considered similar to drug addiction to a certain level, though it is not exactly the same. The difference is more in terms of the physiological manifestations involved in the influence of a substance,” said Dr. Parikh.

Addiction is defined as a repetitive habit pattern that increases the risk of diseases or associated personal and social problems. It is a subjective experience of ‘loss of control’.

Addiction connotes dependence because there are common neurochemical and neuroanatomical pathways found among all addictions — whether it is substance, gambling, sex, eating, internet use or Facebook obsession. “They all display similar patterns of behaviour — like inability to abstain, impairment in behaviour control, craving, diminished recognition of significant behaviourial problems, interpersonal issues and dysfunctional emotional response,” says Dr. Birendra Yadav, psychology clinical operations at telehealth venture – Poccare, Healthenablr.

Experts say Facebook addiction can lead to impulse-control disorders, especially among adolescents where it has led to high prevalence of depression, aggressive behaviour and other psychiatric symptoms. Social media has also been found to have affected lifestyles, resulting in irregular dietary habits, decreased physical activity, short duration of sleep and increased use of alcohol and tobacco.

Is it true that getting out of Facebook addiction is easier than that of substance abuse? “This is subjective and depends on the context, personality and state of mind of the individual concerned and you need to build the will power of the person through both counselling and medication,” Dr. Malhotra says. “Overcoming any kind of addiction is possible with adequate professional interventions,” Dr. Parikh said.

The bottom line: use social media, but do not let it take over your life. Investing time in ‘real’ relationships rather than in the cyberworld can lead to improved mental health, say experts.

Parental anxiety, depression may cause fussy eating in kids

depression, anxiety, fussy eating, childhood diet, childhood fussy eating, stress, prenatal stress While parental anxiety and depression were shown to impact eating behaviour in children as per research, mild tendencies of internalising problems also acts as a factor. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Children whose parents suffer from anxiety and/or depression during pregnancy or early in the child’s life are most likely to become fussy eaters, finds new research.

The analysis was based on 4,746 mother and child pairs and 4,144 dads, whose children had all been born between 2002 and 2006. Parents were asked to complete a validated questionnaire during mid pregnancy, and then again three years later, to assess their own symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The results showed that by the age of three, around 30 per cent of the children were classified as fussy eaters.

For mothers, the anxiety was evident both during pregnancy and during preschool days of the child, whereas for fathers the depression was felt only during the pre-school period. Further, clinically high maternal anxiety scores were more associated with fussy eating. As for depression, the mothers’ prenatal symptoms predicted a four-year-old’s fussy eating behaviour — irrespective of whether she had the symptoms when the child was three. The results were similar for the fathers.

The study “strongly suggests that the direction of the associations with mothers’ antenatal symptoms is from mother to child,” said the team from Erasmus MC-University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

“Clinicians should be aware that not only severe anxiety and depression, but also milder forms of internalising problems can affect child eating behaviour,” they added.

Fussy eating behaviour — which is characterised by the consistent rejection of particular foods — is common in childhood, and a frequent source of concern for parents, the researchers explained in the study published online in the Archives of Disease in Childhood.

Previously, it has been associated with constipation, weight problems and behavioural issues in the child.

Hyperactivity beneficial for kids with ADHD

ADHD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, hyperactivity, memory, working memory, fidgeting, movement, motion, mental health, mental disorder, mental disorders, psychiatric disorders Parents and teachers take note: Don’t scold a child with ADHD for fidgeting constantly. Their hyperactivity aids their working memory. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Hyperactive behaviour exhibited by children with attention deficit disorder may actually prove beneficial for their memory. Children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may benefit cognitively from behaviours like squirming or fidgeting, said the researchers.

The results showed that kids affected with ADHD moved up to 25 per cent more when trying to solve a problem.

The findings suggest that making ADHD kids sit still may be counterproductive. “It’s another piece of evidence that the hyperactive behaviour more and more seems to be purposeful for them,” said Michael Kofler, assistant professor at Florida State University in the US.

Children with ADHD are able to retain information, which they use daily. But they often have difficulty with what’s called working memory — meaning the updating or mentally rearranging of information in the mind.

In the study —published online in the Journal of Attention Disorders — the researchers worked with 25 boys and girls with ADHD of ages 8-12, and devised two types of tests to show a cause-and-effect relationship between working memory demands and hyperactivity in ADHD.

The first test required students to remember where a series of dots appeared on a screen and mentally reordering them based on colour. The other involved remembering a series of numbers and letters, and mentally reordering them — numbers first from smallest to biggest, then the letters. There were between 3-6 items to remember and reorder throughout the tests. The students were given each test multiple times, and the predictability of difficulty differed with each test.

In the less difficult version, they were told how many items they had to remember, and took the test in order. In the difficult version, the amount of information to remember using working memory was random.

The children fidgeted and moved during all the tests as expected, because all the tests were mentally challenging. But they moved up to 25 per cent more when they couldn’t predict how many items they had to remember, the study said.

Couple’s eating habits can up chances of obesity regardless of genetics

obesity, genetics, lifestyle, lifestyle choices, middle age, childhood, lifestyle choices, blood fat content, Body Mass Index, BMI, blood pressure People who come from families with a history of obesity can reduce their risk by changing their lifestyle habits, especially in middle age. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Next time when you try to imitate the way your spouse eats, pause for a moment, as a couple’s lifestyle choices can increase their chances of becoming obese regardless of their genetic profile, finds a study.

According to researchers, choices made by couples in middle age — including those linked to diet and exercise — have a much greater impact on them than the lifestyle each shared during their childhood. “The environment you share with your partner in adulthood also influences whether you become obese, and this is more important than your upbringing,” said lead researcher Chris Haley from the University of Edinburgh in Britain.

The findings — published in the journal PLOS Genetics — reinforce the message that lifestyle changes in adulthood can have a significant impact in tackling obesity. The research helped scientists to better understand links between obesity, genetics and lifestyle habits.

The team analysed data provided by 20,000 people.

They compared people’s family genetics and home environments in childhood and adulthood and related these to measures linked to health and obesity. A total of 16 measures were considered — including waist to hip ratio, blood pressure, body fat content and body mass index (BMI).

The information was gathered as part of the Generation Scotland project — a national resource of health data that helps researchers investigate genetic links to health conditions.

“The findings also show that even people who come from families with a history of obesity can reduce their risk by changing their lifestyle habits,” Haley added.

Overuse of beauty creams causes acne, damages skin: Expert

beauty creams, cosmetic creams, acne, skin damage, thinning of skin, skincare, lasers, chemical peels, Acne India Summit Daily use of beauty creams leads to loosening of the skin — making it thinner — and causes growth of acne. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Overuse of fairness and beauty creams is the root cause for acne and may lead to thinning of the skin, a leading dermatologist said.

“The obvious side-effect of using beauty creams on face is thinning of the skin. Daily use of these creams leads to growth of acne, besides skin losing its tightness and becoming thinner in return,” said Rohit Batra, a skin doctor, at Acne India Summit held at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi.

The one-day programme was aimed at providing education and refreshing knowledge of practising dermatologists regarding acne. A quiz contest and workshop to impart procedural skills to students and private practitioners were also conducted on the occasion. “A growing percentage of population aged 15 to 44 suffers from severe acne. Every patient wants a cure as no one wants to live with scars on their face,” Batra said.

He added that dermatologists are now equipped with state-of-the-art technologies to help patients regain their confidence.

“Contrary to what we are led to believe, acne is not just a concern for adolescents — and the market reflects that. With cutting edge methods like lasers, chemical peels, thermal and non-thermal light sources, one can easily get rid of acne and acne scars,” said Batra, who was also the organising secretary of the summit.

Around 250 dermatologists, students, faculty members and delegates from across the country participated in the event.

Everyday mindfulness may help keep glucose levels healthy

diabetes, type 2 diabetes, glucose, blood glucose, diabetes detection, glucose regulation, obesity, Researchers say mindfulness — awareness of one’s current thoughts and feelings — can be a determinant of Type-2 diabetes risk. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Those who score high on mindfulness — the ability of being aware of one’s current thoughts and feelings — are significantly more likely than people with low scores to have healthy glucose levels, suggests new research. Elevated glucose levels may increase risk of Type-2 diabetes. The researchers also sought to identify factors that might explain the connection they saw between higher mindfulness and healthier glucose levels.

Their analysis of the data showed that obesity risk (mindful people are less likely to be obese) and sense of control (mindful people are more likely to believe they can change many of the important things in their life) both contribute to the link. “This study demonstrated a significant association of dispositional mindfulness with glucose regulation, and provided novel evidence that obesity and sense of control may serve as potential mediators of this association,” said the study led by Eric Loucks, assistant professor at Brown University School of Public Health in Rhode Island, US.

“As mindfulness is likely a modifiable trait, this study provides preliminary evidence for a fairly novel and modifiable potential determinant of diabetes risk,” Loucks noted. The study was published in the American Journal of Health Behavior.

The researchers measured health indicators including dispositional mindfulness and blood glucose in almost 400 people. The study used the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) — a 15-item questionnaire — to assess dispositional mindfulness on a 1 to 7 scale.

The researchers found that people with high MAAS scores of six or seven were 35 per cent more likely to have healthy glucose levels under 100mg per decilitre than people with MAAS scores below four.

Participants with high levels of mindfulness were about 20 per cent less likely to have Type-2 diabetes, but the total number of people in the study with the condition may have been too small to allow for definitive findings, Loucks said.

Did you know financial stress may cause more physical pain?

economic security, pain, pain tolerance, economic insecurity, fear, anxiety, stress, over the counter drugs, over the counter drug consumption, control, employment, unemployment, Financially insecure people are likely to feel more physical pain that financially stable people. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

People who feel that their financial outlook is shaky may actually experience more physical pain than those who feel economically secure, scientists — including one of Indian-origin — suggest.

The findings indicate that the link may be driven by feeling a lack of control over one’s life, researchers said.

“Overall, our findings reveal that it physically hurts to be economically insecure,” said lead study author Eileen Chou of the University of Virginia in US. “Results from six studies establish that economic insecurity produces physical pain, reduces pain tolerance, and predicts over-the-counter painkiller consumption,” Chou said.

The research stemmed from an observation of two co-occurring trends — increasing economic insecurity and increasing complaints of physical pain.

The researchers — including Bidhan Parmar of University of Virginia — hypothesised that these trends might actually be linked.

They said that feelings of economic insecurity would lead people to feel a lack of control in their lives, which would, in turn, activate psychological processes associated with anxiety, fear and stress. These psychological processes have been shown to share similar neural mechanisms to those underlying pain.

Data from a diverse consumer panel of 33,720 individuals showed that households in which both adults were unemployed spent 20 per cent more on over-the-counter painkillers in 2008, compared with households with at least one employed adult. An online study with 187 participants indicated that two measures of economic insecurity — participants’ own unemployment and state-level insecurity — were correlated with participants’ reports of pain. In another online study, participants who recalled a period of economic instability reported almost double the amount of physical pain than did participants who recalled an economically stable period.

This pattern of findings remained even after the researchers took other factors — including age, employment status, and negative emotion — into account.

Evidence from a lab-based study suggested that economic insecurity might be also linked with tolerance for pain. Student participants who were prompted to think about an uncertain job market showed a decrease in pain tolerance, measured by how long they could comfortably keep their hand in a bucket of ice water. Students who were prompted to think about entering a stable job market showed no change in pain tolerance.

The researchers found that the degree to which participants felt in control of their lives helped to account for the association between feelings of economic insecurity and reports of physical pain. “Individuals’ subjective interpretation of their own economic security has crucial consequences above and beyond those of objective economic status,” researchers said.

The study was published in the journal Psychological Science.

Lose belly fat: 10 things in your kitchen that can help you cut that flab

lemon juice Warm water mixed with lemon juice and honey should be a staple in your early morning diet if you’re looking to lose weight. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Most of us are in a constant struggle to lose that extra flab around our belly. Hours of exercise go into sculpting the perfect hourglass shape and a flat stomach; but how many of us are successful? Interestingly, according to many nutritionists, the answer to all this struggle lies in our very own kitchen — everyday ingredients when consumed regularly can help cut down those extra tires, resulting in a mid-riff you’d be proud of. Here are 10 of the ingredients that will help melt the fat immediately.
Tomatoes: It doesn’t matter if you pronounce it to-may-to or to-mah-to, as long as you have them in your diet. Tomatoes have a compound called 9-oxo-octadecadienoic, or 9-oxo-ODA, which helps in the circulation of lipids in the blood resulting in reduction of abdominal fat. Tomato helps control dyslipidemia, a condition that is responsible for fat accumulation in the abdomen.

Apple cider vinegar: A great ingredient to add some zing to your food, apple cider vinegar also attacks that extra flab in your belly. Drinking it before meals can help in weight loss. Apples are a great source of pectin, which makes you feel full and satisfied, thus, cutting down extra eating.

Mint: Mint has a twofold impact — it cuts down the fat by removing extra bile from your gall bladder. This is important because bile helps your body in processing and storing fat. Mint is also a good source of antioxidants that help improve your body’s metabolic rate, thus, help you lose fat.

aloe vera juice with fresh leaves Opt for the fibrous version of the aloe vera juice. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Aloe vera juice: Aloe vera juice is known to be very effective in reducing abdominal fat. It’s also a laxative, which additionally helps in weight loss. Opt for the fibrous version of the juice.

Lemon juice: Lemons are an integral part of Indian cuisine, which makes it readily available in most kitchens. This secret ingredient works wonders in cutting through the layers of stubborn belly fat. Begin your day with a glass of water mixed with lemon juice (about half a lemon would do, or three-fourths) and half a teaspoon of honey.

Watermelon: It has 91 per cent water — that should be self-explanatory. Eating a couple of pieces of watermelon before your meal helps in filling up your stomach, without adding a substantial amount of calories. It also helps combat water retention.

Cucumbers: Love your salads? You’ll love them even more now. Cucumbers, like watermelon, have a high water content and 100g of cucumber just adds about 45 calories to your body. They’re also incredibly refreshing, making them a great snack as well. See that paunch disappearing within weeks while munching on fresh cucumbers.

Different forms of ginger Simply adding a bit of ginger to your everyday cup of tea can do wonders to aid your weight loss endeavours. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Ginger tea: Simply adding ginger to your cup of tea can make a world of a difference to your belly fat. Ginger increases the overall body temperature, which helps burn fat more effectively.

Garlic: Garlic is a thermogenic food, just like ginger, which makes it an excellent ingredient to incorporate in your diet if you’re trying to lose weight, and especially tackle that stubborn belly fat. According to studies, garlic hinders the accumulation of fat in the body.

Beans: Did you know those boring green beans can do wonders to help reduce body fat? Not only that, they help build muscle and since they’re a rich source of fibre, they also improve the digestion process. Like apples, green beans also have a high level of pectin that help you feel full for a longer time. Doesn’t sound so boring now, does it?

Patience is a virtue! Impatient young women may age faster, says study

ageing, stress, impatience, health news It seems the old adage of ‘fortune favours those who wait’ is actually true, scientifically proven. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

For young women seeking longevity and youth, a little patience may help you live longer, a new study suggests.

Researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have found that young impatient Chinese women exhibit signs of more rapid ageing at the cellular level. They found that the cells of impatient young women are ageing faster than their more patient peers, as characterised by shorter leukocyte telomeres.

This novel study is the first to link a fundamental determinant of decision-making such as impatience to a molecular marker for cellular ageing in humans. Researchers worked with a sample of 1,158 healthy Chinese undergraduates. To determine the participants’ extent of impatience, researchers employed a behavioural economic game known as ‘delay discounting’.

They asked participants to decide between receiving $100 the next day, or larger rewards later. Participants who opted for earlier gratification were deemed as more impatient. Researchers measured the length of the participants’ leukocyte telomeres – the caps at the end of each DNA strand which protect the chromosome. Telomeres decrease in length each time a cell divides and ages, and once they reach a critical short length, the cell will no longer divide.

Researchers discovered that females who were identified as impatient had shorter telomere length. Existing research suggests that telomere length could be an initial predictor of disease and earlier mortality. Older cells, and older people, generally have shorter telomeres, researchers said.

No similar significant correlations were observed in the male participants. The findings were robust after controlling for health-related variables, risk appetite (or inclination for risk) and lifestyle behaviours. “Patience is indeed a virtue and women with impatient
personality types are likely growing older at a faster pace than women disposed to be more patient,” said Richard Ebstein from NUS.

The study is the first to link a fundamental determinant of decision-making such as impatience to a molecular marker for cellular ageing in humans. The findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Cheers! Alcohol in moderation good for heart, say studies

health food, wine, alcohol good for health, alcohol moderation, good drinks for health, health news, latest health news It’s primarily the alcohol that leads to more good cholesterol, among other things. But it can cause high BP too, so be careful. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

People who drink wine, liquor or beer in moderation are less prone to heart failure and heart attacks than those who rarely or never drink, according to two new studies.

The researchers found that three-five drinks a week can be good for your heart. “It’s primarily the alcohol that leads to more good cholesterol, among other things. But alcohol can also cause higher blood pressure. So, it’s best to drink moderate amounts relatively often,” said one of the researchers Imre Janszky, professor of social medicine at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

While one of the studies published in the International Journal of Cardiology is about heart failure, the other published in the Journal of Internal Medicine evaluated the relationship between alcohol and acute myocardial infarction (AMI), the medical term for heart attack.

In both cases, research showed that people who regularly drink alcohol have better cardiovascular health than those who consume little or no alcohol. The studies showed that those who drank three-five drinks per week were 33 per cent less prone to heart failure than those who abstained or drank infrequently.

In the case of heart attacks too, moderate alcohol consumption was found to be beneficial. The study, which looked at the relationship between heart failure and alcohol, followed 60,665 participants who enrolled for a larger study between 1995-1997 and who had no incidence of heart failure at that time. Of those, 1,588 of them developed heart failure during the period of the study, which ended in 2008.

The risk was highest for those who rarely or never drank alcohol, and for those who had an alcohol problem. In the heart attack study, 58,827 participants were categorised by how much and how often they drank. The researchers found that 2,966 of the participants experienced an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) between 1995 and the end of 2008. The analyses showed that each additional one-drink increment decreased the risk of AMI by 28 percent.

“I’m not encouraging people to drink alcohol all the time. We’ve only been studying the heart, and it’s important to emphasise that a little alcohol every day can be healthy for the heart. But that doesn’t mean it’s necessary to drink alcohol every day to have a healthy heart,” Janszky said.

Graphic images won’t help quit smoking: Study

smoking, anti-smoking, how to quit smoking, smoking warning signs, latest health news, health news Many smokers simply buy and use slip covers that go over the package, so the warning doesn’t really prove effective. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Graphic images like cancerous lungs and lips may not deter smokers to quit smoking, rather for many of them these images are perceived as a threat to their freedom, choice or autonomy, finds a study.

According to a University of Illinois study “the good intentions of this tobacco control measure may be for naught”. “What we found is that most people don’t like these warning labels, whether they are smokers or non-smokers,” said lead author of the study, Nicole LaVoie, in the paper published in the journal Communication Research. “It makes them angry, it makes them express negative thoughts about the packaging that they’re being manipulated,” LaVoie added.

The participants in the study were 435 undergraduates between the ages of 18 and 25, with a median age of 20. All participants were given a cigarette package, along with a questionnaire designed to measure certain personality traits, as well as their reaction to the package. Half of the smokers and half of the non-smokers were given packages with graphic warning labels and the other half were given packages with a text-only label like the one now in use.

Also, many smokers simply buy and use slip covers that go over the package, she said. They can avoid the images, regain a sense of control and continue to smoke. Since smokers tend to be somewhat higher in this trait, LaVoie said: “We might actually be doing harm to a group that might need the most help if they’re battling an addiction to smoking.”

“We always measure and look at the intended effects, like encouraging people to quit smoking, but sometimes we don’t remember to look at what else these messages are doing that we’re not thinking about, like causing reactance,” LaVoie said. “If these individuals see things as freedom threats, they are going to be more attracted to perform the threatened behaviour,” said co-researcher Brian Quick.

Eating almonds daily can boost your overall health

Bowl full of almonds The parents were instructed to eat 42.52g of almonds each day and the children were encouraged to eat 14.17g of almonds. (Source: Thinkstock Images)

Eating moderate amount of almonds daily right from childhood days can drastically improve health later in life, a study has found. “If a parent is able to incorporate almonds or different healthy snacks into a child’s diet, it’s more likely that the child will choose those snacks later on in life,” said lead researcher Alyssa Burns from University of Florida.

To reach the conclusion, researchers studied the effect that the addition of almonds can have on a person’s diet quality. For a 14-week study, data was collected from 28 pairs of parents and children.

The parents were instructed to eat 42.52g of almonds each day and the children were encouraged to eat 14.17g of almonds or an equivalent amount of almond butter each day. The findings, published in the Journal of Nutrition Research, showed that after the almond intervention, the average “Healthy Eating Index” score for parents and children increased.

The results suggest that wholefood approaches, like adding almonds to one’s diet, may be an achievable way to improve overall public health. “Adding a variety of fruits, vegetables and nuts to your diet can improve your overall diet quality,” Burns added, suggesting parents and children to replace salty and processed snacks with almonds.

Exposure to air pollution may increase obesity, diabetes risk

Exposure to polluted air may increase the risk of obesity and lead to high cholesterol and more insulin resistance, a precursor of Type 2 diabetes, a new study has warned.

Researchers from Duke University in US found that laboratory rats who breathed Beijing’s highly polluted air gained weight and experienced cardio-respiratory and metabolic dysfunctions. The pollution-breathing pregnant rats had heavier lungs and livers and increased tissue inflammation, researchers said.

For the study, they placed pregnant rats and their offspring in two chambers, one exposed to outdoor Beijing air and the other containing an air filter that removed most of the air pollution particles. After only 19 days, the lungs and livers of pregnant rats exposed to the polluted air were heavier and showed increased tissue inflammation. These rats had 50 per cent higher Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol; 46 per cent higher triglycerides; and 97 per cent higher total cholesterol. Their insulin resistance level, a precursor of Type 2 diabetes, was higher than their clean air-breathing counterparts.

The results show that air pollution exposure results in metabolic dysfunction, a precursor to obesity. Pollution-exposed rats were significantly heavier at the end of their pregnancy even though the rats in both groups were fed the same diet.

Similar results were shown in the rat offspring, which were kept in the same chambers as their mothers. The negative effects of air pollution were less pronounced after three weeks than they were at eight weeks, suggesting that long-term exposure may be needed to generate the continuous inflammatory and metabolic changes that ultimately increase body weight.

At eight weeks old, female and male rats exposed to the pollution were 10 per cent and 18 per cent heavier, respectively, than those exposed to clean air. “Since chronic inflammation is recognised as a factor contributing to obesity and since metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity are closely related, our findings provide clear evidence that chronic exposure to air pollution increases the risk for developing obesity,” said Junfeng Zhang from Duke University.

“If translated and verified in humans, these findings will support the urgent need to reduce air pollution, given the growing burden of obesity in today’s highly polluted world,” said Zhang. The findings were published in the Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.
